Respected Memsahibs. an Anthology

.. contains extracts from the letters, memoirs and narratives of nineteen women who lived and worked across the British Indian Empire between the First World War and Independence in 1947. ... a unique record of life and work in the latter days of the British Raj. That we have such a record is due almost entirely to the dedication and indefatigable work of Mary Thatcher, who began in the later 1960s to collect material from former residents of different parts of British Asia. With a combination of tact, persistence and charm she assembled a large number of collections of papers and recorded interviews. Yet she was particularly interested in the lives of women and in many cases asked them to write more substantial memoirs of their time in India.- from the Introduction by Professor Sir Christopher BaylyThe women are Mrs Lucy Elinor Lyall Grant, Mrs Christian Showers, Mrs Margaret Murison, Lady Beatrix Scott, Lady Lyle Maxwell, Mrs Violet Fulford Williams, Mrs Mollie Dench, Mrs Anne Parry, Lady Jean Anderson, Lady Alice Stokes, Lady Olive Crofton, Mrs Kits M. Mullan, Mrs Joan Cruickshank, Mrs Viola Bayley, Dr Hilda Davis, Mrs Elisabeth Stewart, Miss Muriel McKnight, Mrs Margery Hall, Mrs Eve Ross, and Mrs Iris Butler (Portal)

Gottipolu Rajarami Reddy and Davuljigari Chand Basha Developmental toxicity in lead exposed rats:Reversal effect of calcium

Early life exposure to Pb altered the cholinergic, aminergic and antoxidant systems, associated with motor functions of developing and young rats. These impairments in motor functions and neurochemical parameters (cholinergic, aminergic and mitochondrial antioxidant enzymes) remain for long after Pb exposure has stopped. Supplementation with calcium reversed the Pb induced neurotoxicity by modifying the motor functions and restoring the specific enzyme activities and neurotransmitters. Adequate calcium intake will be beneficial to reduce Pb induced neurotoxicity during development of rat brain.

John Fisher Tony Hancock: The Definitive Biography

Tony Hancock was regarded as the best radio and television comic of his era. A man whose star burned brightly in the eyes and ears of millions before his untimely death. This is the first fully authorised account of his life.Tony Hancock was one of post-war Britain’s most popular comedians – his radio show ‘Hancock’s Half Hour’ would clear the streets as whole families tuned in to listen. His peerless timing and subtle changes in intonation marked Hancock out as a comic genius. His character ‘Anthony Aloysius St John Hancock’ was an amplification of his own persona, a pompous prat whose dreams of success are constantly thwarted. The original British loser that we recognise in Victor Meldrew and Alan Partridge. Wonderfully supported by a cast including Sid James, Hattie Jacques and Kenneth Williams, and working with scripts from Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, Hancock became a huge star. The show was commisioned for TV, showcasing his talent for hilarious facial expression, and he became the first British comedian to earn a thousand pounds a week.Behind Tony Hancock’s success however hid the self-destructive behaviour that plagued him all his life. Prone to self-doubt, and wanting to be the star of his own show, he got rid of James, and finally dismissed Galton and Simpson who had created the platform for his success. His private life was wracked by his ever increasing alcoholism and bouts of depression, and his relationships shattered by his capacity for violence. His ratings fell and, feeling washed up and alone after divorcing his second wife, he committed suicide in an Australian hotel room in 1968.Now, forty years after his death John Fisher explores the turbulent life of a man regarded by his peers as one of the greatest British comics to have ever lived.

Mrs. Henry Wood Halliburton's Troubles by Wood, Fiction

MRS. HALLIBURTON'S TROUBLES is one of the less sensational novels written by Mrs. Henry Wood, which is to say that only half the characters have to contend with debt, seduction, murder, roguery, deception, and that worst of all Victorian fates, sinking below their class. These are the troubles that beset those without the strength of will and sterling moral character of the novel's heroine, the widowed Mrs. Halliburton, who supports her children with nothing more than unremitting labor and a belief in God. Mrs. Halliburton's iron will contrasts with the dissolute lifestyle of the Halliburtons' cousins, the Dares, who suffer one scandal and disgrace after another. In the end, of course, God helps only those who helped themselves. Although she is all but forgotten in modern literary circles, Mrs. Henry Wood was one of the most famous novelists of the Victorian period, with a sales record that rivaled Dickens. Where Dickens portrayed social forces as well as characters, however, Wood emphasized the power of the individual. For her, Mrs. Halliburton's poverty is an opportunity to explore the idea of character and the ways in which people determine their own fate. In this Mrs. Henry Wood anticipated the rags-to-riches novels of Horatio Alger.

Bill Hancock M1 Brothers

Bill Hancock takes the reader on an adventure that chronicles life in the early fifties. M1 Brothers is a fast paced story that mingles military adventure with history, espionage, courage, honor, and humor. The M1 Brothers find fraternity, love and deception; deal with psychological issues, and create mischief akin to MASH. Main character, Charlie Canfield, CC to all, is the reluctant scion of a lineage of warriors. He worries about his ability to emulate these heroic predecessors even though he possesses the means that can make it possible. Hancock's cruel and cunning North Korean master spy is Bek Man Sue. His goal is to disrupt and overturn the South Korean government, while brutally punishing adversaries. Brian Roberts is the uniquely talented pawn in this masterful tale as it whirls across the treacherous hills behind the DMZ (demilitarized zone).

Brian Wampler Participatory Budgeting in Brazil. Contestation, Cooperation, and Accountability

As Brazil and other countries in Latin America turned away from their authoritarian past and began the transition to democracy in the 1980s and 1990s, interest in developing new institutions to bring the benefits of democracy to the citizens in the lower socioeconomic strata intensified, and a number of experiments were undertaken. Perhaps the one receiving the most attention has been Participatory Budgeting (PB), first launched in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre in 1989 by a coalition of civil society activists and Workers' Party officials. PB quickly spread to more than 250 other municipalities in the country, and it has since been adopted in more than twenty countries worldwide. Most of the scholarly literature has focused on the successful case of Porto Alegre and has neglected to analyze how it fared elsewhere. In this first rigorous comparative study of the phenomenon, Brian Wampler draws evidence from eight municipalities in Brazil to show the varying degrees of success and failure PB has experienced. He identifies why some PB programs have done better than others in achieving the twin goals of ensuring governmental accountability and empowering citizenship rights for the poor residents of these cities in the quest for greater social justice and a well-functioning democracy. Conducting extensive interviews, applying a survey to 650 PB delegates, doing detailed analysis of budgets, and engaging in participant observation, Wampler finds that the three most...
